Kids Step Stool Process Plan

Start by purchasing a 3/4" pine board that is 10" by 4' or 6"board by 6' (glue together) for the sides. The cross pieces can use 1/4" plywood 1' x 2'. Cut the plywood into strips of 2 1/2" by 12". You will need 2 1/2' of 1/2" plastic cold water pipe. 16 1 1/8"lg drywall screws, land finallly 2 2 1/2" x 1/4" bolts and nuts along with 4 washers.

Using the drawing, draw out the side holes locations on the two side boards cut to 12" x 9 1/4". Drill pilot holes through the hole locations using a 1/8" drill bit. Follow that by drilling out the two pipe holes using a 13/16" spade drill, be sure to only drill halfway through the wood, and turn the boards over to drill out the other sides.

Draw out the shape of the two sides and cut out the shape using a jigsaw.

Sand all surfaces. Using a rotary grinder, enlarge the pipe holes so the plastic pipe just fits through the holes..

Fit the pipe pieces through the holes and drill through the wood and plastic pipe so you can nail through to hold the pipe in place to the sides for assembling. Leave at lease 1/2" drill depth so you can drive the nails in through the sides and have it hold to the wood.

Cut out your cross pieces from the 1/4" plywood and attach to the sides using drywall screws. Make sure there are no splinters on any edges. Sand for smoothness.

If you wish to embellish the sides with a design, nows the time.

Attach the step to the sides using the 1/4" bolt washers and nuts, so the step sides glide smoothly past the side frame.

Finish with paint or varnish to suit.
